GSIS is the Government Service Insurance System, a social insurance institution that provides life insurance, retirement, and other benefits to all government employees in the Philippines. GSIS serves as the counterpart of SSS (Social Security System) for the public sector, covering over 1.5 million active government workers and pensioners.

What is GSIS?

  • GSIS stands for Government Service Insurance System
  • GSIS was established under Commonwealth Act No. 186 in 1936 and reorganized under Republic Act No. 8291 (GSIS Act of 1997)
  • GSIS provides social security and insurance benefits to all government employees in the Philippines
  • GSIS coverage is mandatory for all government employees receiving fixed monthly compensation
  • GSIS administers life insurance, retirement, disability, and survivorship benefits
  • GSIS also offers loan programs such as policy loans and emergency loans to active members
  • GSIS is governed by a Board of Trustees and headed by the President and General Manager
